Heroes of Might and Magic 3 had pretty amazing map generation. Random maps always felt pretty interesting, almost hand crafted, yet highly varied. Are there are resources or tutorials on how these maps were generated that people know of? There's VCMI, an open source homm3 engine that has random map generation. Code is here .
Favorite map to play in HoMM III? I played the Peaceful Ending map for like 4 times in the last 2 months, so it's safe to say it's my favorite. First of all, it has the dwellings of all the 'exotic' dragons, except Rust, but Rust sucks anyway. Nothing like beating an entire army with only 1 of those guys. Second, because of the artifacts.
The campaign mode is only one of three ways to enjoy Heroes of Might and Magic III. The campaigns are the "stories" told by the game. They are for single player use. There are six campaigns in the

Enk3lt. •. You should try the one called “Fawn’s labyrinth”. It is a dual Giant map you play allied with a friend. It’s AMAZING and takes A LOT of time to finish. Each time you load it up, you figure something new out on the map. It’s cool!
Besides those 8 heroes, you will have three different cities at your disposal - Inferno and Dungeon (points S1 and S2 on the map), giving you access to everything, as well as a Castle type (point S3 on the map), which, unfortunately, can't be developed properly, as it has most of its buildings locked (that is why it will serve the purpose of a gold generator).

Heroes of Might & Magic III is a computer game, created by Gregory Fulton & Jon Van Caneghem. The game comes with a Random Map Generator, as well with a Map Editor; alongside the campaign & standalone Scenarios. This is one of my most favourite games, and since there still are people playing it, I decided to release the work on my own 144x144x2
In the meantime, while you use Vokial to attack the enemy, you should build up your own cities. Due to the fact, that you will soon conquer a city located right in the middle of the map, you should focus on developing the Necropolis which is furthest to the West (point S1 on the map), because it will be easier to operate with that - the other two Necropolises should be used, at least for now
